[TRANS] 140924 Night Watchmen’s Journal is Below Expectations, Whereas Yunho is More than Expected at Least

There are dramas rated as the masterpiece even with low viewer ratings.
In contrast, there are dramas that are hard to get rated as the masterpiece even with the high viewer ratings.
That is ‘Night Watchmen’s Journal’ on MBC.

‘Night Watchmen’s Journal’, that has been aired up to 16th episode, had been in the lead among the Mon-Tue dramas with it’s best viewer ratings of 12.7% ( based on Nielsen Korea’s data).
As the 16th episode, with the viewer ratings of 9.5%, yielded the top spot to SBS’s new Mon-Tue drama ‘Secret Door’, the future competition looks more like a close one.
However, the problem is that ‘Night Watchmen’s Journal’ doesn’t have a promising future since interest has been lost in it.

The historical drama with fantasy ‘Night Watchmen’s Journal’ in Joseon era, with it’s night watchmen and youth romance as materials, was a piece that was anticipated as much as the next ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’.
Choi WonYoung’s overwhelming charisma, with his special appearance in the 1st and 2nd episodes ( as the king), had also encouraged the anticipations.

However, the loose development of the story has started when the lead actors appeared in earnest.
As the script was more concentrated on KiSan-gun and the bad guy, Sadam, the actual leads’ stories were slow.
You can tell how slow the progress was by the fact that the organization of the night watchmen, which was the most anticipated element in the drama, was only done in the 13th episode.

Although the romance between Yi Rin ( Jung IlWoo) and DoHa ( Ko SungHee) was portrayed repeatedly, it wasn’t shown in a smooth way emotionally, which was not enough to gain the viewers’ sympathy.
Even the CG, controversial from the beginning, is still not up to par with the viewers’ expectations.

The unbalance between the characters is also a problem.
Because of the set-up that is heavily relying on one particular character, even though Yi Rin, DoHa and MooSuk ( U-Know Yunho) got together as night watchmen, the appropriateness has been somewhat lost on why the three people have to be in a team.
It is a different structure from the common hero story with multiple leads in which one character makes up for the weak points of the other, creating synergy and balancing out.

Above all, the leads’ acting skills are not working in their favor.
The two female leads, Ko SungHee and Suh YeJi, had lowered the viewers’ engagement in the beginning with their acting that didn’t go well with the historical drama.
Even though Ko SungHee acts an imaginary character in the fusion historical drama, her appearance and costumes that were far from the JoSeon era were the problems in the beginning and Suh YeJi’s unstable vocalization is still ongoing without improvement.

Jung IlWoo's character is basically the one with full of mischief, however, he alone acts in so many different types of scenes by showing emotions in the middle of covert fights and going back and forth between actions and melodrama. Therefore he has a hard time giving impressions to the viewers on his own as the character, Yi Rin.

At least, U-Know Yunho as MooSuk is the only one showing acting skills more than expected.
Initially, because U-Know Yunho is an idol star and there was a controversy on his acting in the past, he had raised the most concern from the viewers in his first attempt in a historical drama among the four leads.
However, in actual, Yunho has been acting suitably for the historical drama with his stable vocalization, and has been acting perfectly in the action scenes while concentrating in the role of icy MooSuk.
Thus he stands out among the main characters.

Especially, Yunho left a profound impression when MooSuk sobbed seeing his sister InHwa pass away while expressing the emotions of grief and weeping tears of sorrow.
He is also acting the agonizing MooSuk’s inner side delicately in becoming a night watchman.
The pronunciation part could be better but when compared to his previous dramas, he is showing the more advanced acting in ‘Night Watchmen’s Journal’ and it is worth expecting for more.
